~~~ I've been absolutely terrified every moment of my life -- and I've never let it keep me from doing a single thing I wanted to do. Georgia O'Keeffe
It occurred to me after living vicariously through local artists, wondering
how they made the art they did, that I too was an artist.
It didn't come forward until working on my English degree. Taking a
beginning drawing class to satisfy a requirement, I discovered I wanted
to explore visual art; I could say more visually than with words.
I am an artist, a traveler, a researcher and a teacher. I believe we all
have stories to tell.
I engage in the process of visually exploring and describing my
experiences as a woman living in an urban culture in the 21st century.
I utilize the past as I discover it, using photographs and history that has
gone before. The human figure and nature are central to my work. I
question what is familiar and find nuances buried in the layers of the
everyday.. I wonder aloud at times, do people see this like I do?
Text is still an important component in my work, and most every piece
has a story or text beneath and through the work.
I work using a process of building layers, sometimes placing familiar
imagery in context of a new environment. The voice of my work is
evident in the line and space that becomes a new language within the
work.
Painting, drawing and taking photographs is a form of discovery for me.
I hope, as most artists, the work I create touches the viewer in some way.
And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom. Anais Nin ~~~
